I recently embarked on a hike to the Cenghen Waterfall and can confidently say it’s a must-do for anyone visiting the Lake Como region. The trail is remarkably easy, winding through lush forests and offering glimpses of the stunning surrounding landscape. While it’s labeled as a “mountain trail”, don’t let that intimidate you. The gentle incline and well-maintained path make it suitable for hikers of all ages and fitness levels.

After about an hour of leisurely hiking, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of the cascading Cenghen Waterfall. The powerful rush of water against the rugged rocks is both invigorating and peaceful. The surrounding area provides ample opportunities to relax and simply enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Madonna delle Grazie di San Martino Sanctuary

Legend has it that a local shepherdess stumbled upon a miraculous statue of the Madonna in a nearby cave. This discovery led to the construction of the sanctuary, and over the centuries, it has become a beloved pilgrimage site for locals and visitors alike. The church’s unique location, atop a rocky outcrop, provides a serene and contemplative atmosphere.

During my visit, I learned about the church’s role as a lookout point during Roman times and its significance during the Reformation. The discovery of Byzantine gold coins on the site further attests to its historical importance. Despite being stripped bare by thieves on several occasions, the sanctuary has retained its original beauty, thanks to the dedication of the local community.

I was particularly struck by the small chapel dedicated to Saint Charles, which serves as a poignant memorial to fallen soldiers. The frescoes inside the chapel are both beautiful and moving, and they offer a glimpse into the region’s history.

Garden of the Valley

This botanical marvel began its life in the 1980s as an unsightly eyesore. But thanks to the tireless efforts of a local woman, affectionately known as Nonna Pupa, the valley underwent an extraordinary transformation. Fed up with the pollution and neglect, Nonna Pupa embarked on a mission to turn this wasteland into a haven of peace and tranquility. With unwavering determination, she convinced local authorities to allow her to “adopt” the valley and create a garden.

Over the years, Nonna Pupa and her dedicated team of volunteers worked tirelessly to clear away the debris and plant a diverse array of flora. Today, the Valley Garden boasts over a hundred and thirty species of plants, winding paths, tranquil ponds, and even a charming book-sharing library.

The Valley Garden is more than just a botanical paradise; it’s a symbol of hope and resilience. Its story has inspired countless people and has even been the subject of a documentary film and a book. The garden continues to evolve and grow, thanks to the support of the local community and visitors alike.
