Lake Como Greenway

Contents

Hey there, intrepid traveler! Ready to dive into an adventure that involves breathtaking lakeside views, charming villages, and a bit of legwork? Well, grab your comfiest walking shoes because we’re about to explore Lake Como Greenway, a walking trail that’s like a gift from Mother Nature herself.

It’s like Italy’s way of saying, “Hey, let’s make walking awesome!” This trail takes you on a picturesque journey along the western shore of Lake Como, linking up some of the most enchanting villages you’ve ever seen.

Lake Como Greenway Description

Think of the Lake Como Greenway as a walking sampler of everything you came to Lake Como to see: quaint village streets, stunning waterfront views, and a slice of Italian history with each step. It’s an easy-to-moderate walk suitable for most ages and fitness levels: 10 km walking trail, typically taking around 3 to 4 hours to complete.

You’ll be strolling through towns like Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, and Tremezzo, each one brimming with old-world character and plenty of tempting cafés for a quick break.

The path itself is well-marked, usually with signs reading “Greenway del Lago di Como.” You’ll wander along ancient cobblestone paths, pass by historic villas, and occasionally find yourself on a quiet pedestrian lane with just the lake and mountains as company. If you start in Colonno, the walk naturally flows from town to town, each with its own personality and surprises—whether it’s a lakeside garden, a medieval church, or a boat dock that practically begs you to pause for a while.

What to Expect at Lake Como Greenway

As you set foot on the Greenway, you’ll be greeted by the calming whispers of Lake Como’s crystal-clear waters. Now, picture this: You’re wandering through charming villages like Lenno, Mezzegra, and Tremezzo. Cobbled streets, historic churches, and waterfront promenades, these places are like a postcard come to life.

And the best part? You get to explore them at your own pace, taking in the local vibes and maybe even savoring a gelato or two.

You’ll come across some fantastic spots along the Greenway. At Sala Comacina, check out the views of Isola Comacina, the lake’s only island, which comes with its own little lore and legends.

When you reach Ossuccio, the ancient Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena, with its unique bell tower, is worth a quick detour. In Lenno, Villa Balbianello’s gardens are nothing short of grand, and though the villa itself isn’t directly on the Greenway, it’s close enough to make the extra steps well worth it.

The Stages of Your Greenway Walk

Alright, adventure seeker, let’s break down your Greenway del Lago journey into bite-sized stages, so you know exactly what to expect. Trust me, it’s going to be a memorable trek!

Stage 1: Lenno to Mezzegra

You’ll kick off your adventure in the charming village of Lenno. Start at the iconic Villa Balbianello, famous for its romantic terraced gardens and film appearances. From there, follow the lakeside path towards Mezzegra. The serene views of Lake Como will keep you company as you amble along. Don’t forget your camera!

Stage 2: Mezzegra to Tremezzo

As you leave Mezzegra behind, you’ll encounter quaint lakeside promenades and hidden corners where time seems to stand still. You’ll stroll past the 16th-century Church of Saint Abbondio, where history whispers through every stone. Keep heading north, and you’ll reach Tremezzo.

Stage 3: Tremezzo to Lenno (Ossuccio)

From Tremezzo, make your way to Ossuccio. Here, you’ll find the legendary Sacro Monte di Ossuccio, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring chapels dedicated to the life of Saint Francis. It’s a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views are a fantastic reward.

Stage 4: Ossuccio to Colonno

Continue along the path, and you’ll reach Colonno. The terrain might get a bit rugged here, but the vistas are oh-so-worth-it. You’ll pass through lush woods, and eventually, the trail will lead you to the village of Colonno.

Stage 5: Colonno to Argegno

Next up, the trail takes you to Argegno. This part of the journey offers some magnificent views of Lake Como from above. Argegno itself is a charming village with cobbled streets and an authentic Italian atmosphere. Perfect for a leisurely break.

Stage 6: Argegno to Cadenabbia

Leaving Argegno, you’ll continue your adventure to Cadenabbia. This section of the Greenway brings you closer to the lake, offering plenty of spots to take a refreshing dip or capture some envy-inducing photos.

Stage 7: Cadenabbia to Griante

Griante is your next destination. Here, you’ll find the beautiful Villa Carlotta, famous for its art collection and botanical gardens. Stroll through the gardens, admire the sculptures, and soak in the serenity.

Stage 8: Griante to Menaggio

Your final stretch leads you to the lovely town of Menaggio. Along the way, you’ll pass through charming villages, see rustic chapels, and enjoy breathtaking vistas of Lake Como.

Before you embark on your Greenway Lake Como adventure, it’s essential to note that the stages mentioned earlier are based on a hypothetical journey starting from Lenno and ending in Menaggio. However, the official starting point of the Greenway del Lago is Colonno.

The Origins of the Lake Como Greenway

The Lake Como Greenway isn’t some ancient Roman road, but it does have roots in paths that have connected these towns for centuries. Historically, people moved between Lake Como’s towns by water or along these very routes, which were essential for trade and communication long before the days of cars.

The Greenway itself was officially established in the early 2000s as a way to encourage slow, sustainable tourism. The goal was to let visitors enjoy the lake at a leisurely pace while keeping foot traffic manageable and helping preserve the area’s natural beauty.

The result is a trail that feels both authentic and tourist-friendly, a mix of historical paths and carefully chosen scenic spots. It’s a brilliant way to experience Lake Como as travelers might have centuries ago, though today, you’re more likely to run into a couple of selfie sticks than a horse and cart.

How to get to Greenway

By car

  • From Como:
To reach the Lake Como Greenway by car, follow the A9 motorway towards Como-Chiasso. Take the Lago di Como exit, which is the last exit before reaching the Swiss border. After the exit, you'll reach a roundabout—follow the signs for Menaggio and continue on Strada Statale SS340. This road will take you along the western shore of Lake Como, with Lenno and Tremezzo being the main starting points for the Greenway. The drive from Como to Lenno takes approximately 45 minutes, and to Tremezzo around 40 minutes.
  • Parking:
There are several parking areas in both Lenno and Tremezzo where you can leave your car while you walk the Greenway. These parking spots are typically paid, with rates around €1-2 per hour. It's best to arrive early, as these spots can fill up quickly, especially during peak tourist season.

By boat

The Navigazione Laghi di Como ferries stop at several key points along the lake, including Sala Comacina, Campo, Lenno, Tremezzo, and Villa Carlotta, all of which are easily accessible from the Greenway.  Additionally, car ferries connect Bellagio with Cadenabbia (Griante) and Varenna with Menaggio, providing convenient access to the Greenway’s starting points.

Tickets can be purchased at the dock or online, with prices typically ranging from €7-10 for a one-way journey.

By public transport

  • From Como:
To reach the Lake Como Greenway from Como, you can take the ASF C10 bus (Como-Menaggio-Colico) line. This bus runs from the Como bus station and will take you to the towns of Lenno and Tremezzo, which are key starting points for the Greenway. The bus ride takes about 45-50 minutes to reach Lenno and approximately 40 minutes to Tremezzo.
  • From Menaggio:
If you're coming from Menaggio, take the same ASF C10 bus to Tremezzo or Lenno. The journey from Menaggio to Tremezzo takes around 20 minutes.
