Meet the Ghosts of Vezio Castle
Who knew a medieval castle perched on a hillside overlooking the stunning Lake Como would become one of my favorite places on Earth? Vezio Castle isn’t just a historical site; it’s a place where time seems to stand still. Built in the 11th century, it has seen its fair share of battles, sieges, and noble families.
One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the castle’s gardens. And don’t miss the chance to learn about the Lariosaurus, an ancient marine reptile whose fossils were discovered nearby. An unique feature of the Castle is the presence of a large number of statues representing ghosts. They are known as the fantasmi di Vezio and they are spreaded all through the Castle.
Last but not least, another real magic of Vezio Castle: its panoramic views. From the castle walls, you can gaze out at the endless expanse of Lake Como, the perfect place to relax, reflect, and soak up the beauty of nature.
Dive in the Orrido di Bellano
Have you ever wondered about the power of nature to shape the world around us? The Orrido di Bellano is a testament to the relentless forces of erosion over millions of years. This dramatic gorge, carved by the rushing waters of the Pioverna River, offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
The Orrido’s formation is a fascinating story that stretches back millions of years. During the Ice Age, glacial meltwaters carved deep into the landscape, creating the initial contours of the gorge. Over time, the relentless force of the Pioverna River continued to shape the rock, resulting in the dramatic cliffs and deep pools we see today.
The sheer scale of the Orrido is truly breathtaking. As you venture deeper into the gorge, a network of carefully constructed walkways guides you along the cliff face, providing breathtaking views of the rushing water below. The Orrido’s dramatic landscape and secluded location have given rise to countless legends and tales. One such legend tells of a brave warrior named Taino, who is said to be buried within the gorge with his treasure. Another popular local tale is that of the “Cà del Diavol” (Devil’s House), a mysterious tower located at the entrance to the Orrido.

The interior is equally impressive, with soaring ceilings, stained-glass windows, and a wealth of artistic treasures. Don’t miss the opportunity to admire the beautiful frescoes, the intricate marble inlay work, and the stunning dome designed by the renowned architect Filippo Juvarra.
The two statues of Pliny the Younger and Pliny the Elder, prominent figures in Roman history who hailed from Como, stand proudly on the facade. These statues are a nod to the city’s rich past and its association with these influential intellectuals.
