Sorico – Domaso (lakeside cycling path)

Cycling along the river

The Sorico to Domaso cycling path is your ticket to a fantastic experience. This eight-kilometer path is mostly flat, making it accessible to riders of all ages and fitness levels. You’ll pass through charming villages like Gera Lario, each offering its own local flavor.
Need more? You can extend the path starting from Colico, here’s a guided tour.

Starting at Piazza C. Battisti in Sorico, you’ll follow well-marked signs that lead you along the river Mera and eventually to the lake. The path is mostly paved, with a few sections of gravel, so a standard road bike will do just fine. Keep an eye out for the local flora and fauna, and don’t forget to take plenty of photos!

After reaching Domaso, you can continue your exploration or simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere. The town has a wide range of restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as a beautiful beach where you can cool off with a swim. Remember: spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit, as the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.

Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

  • Highlights: quaint villages, and opportunities to see local wildlife
  • Distance: approximately 8 kilometers
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Terrain: mostly flat, with a mix of paved paths and dirt tracks

Sorico – Domaso is around 4.9 miles (8 km)

Menaggio – Porlezza cycling path

The ancient railway tunnels

The Menaggio-Porlezza cycling path follows the old railway line that once connected these two charming lakeside towns. I’ve been on this path a few times, and it’s one of my favorite rides. Imagine pedaling along a route that used to be bustling with steam engines and passengers. Today, it’s a peaceful, car-free zone, perfect for soaking up the scenery.

Starting in Menaggio, you’ll find yourself winding through nature and medieval towns. The path is mostly flat, making it a great option for casual riders and families. Keep an eye out for the old railway station in Menaggio – it’s now a local market.

As you pedal along, you’ll pass through tunnels, over bridges, and through great forests. One of the highlights is the stunning view of Lake Piano, a serene natural reserve. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even take a detour to the medieval village of Castel S. Pietro.

Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

  • Highlights: historic railway bridges, peaceful nature reserves.
  • Distance: approximately 13.5 kilometers (one way).
  • Difficulty: easy to moderate, suitable for most fitness levels.
  • Terrain: mostly flat, with a few gentle inclines.

Menaggio – Porlezza cycling path is around 8,3 miles (13,5 km)

Gera Lario – Dongo cycling path

Perfect balance of nature and sport: Gera Lario – Dongo path

I usually kick off this ride from Sorico, as there’s a handy parking spot near the cemetery. From there, it’s a non-stop lakeside journey with the majestic Legnone mountain as your constant companion. This stretch of the cycle path is pretty darn long – over 10 kilometers! But don’t worry, it’s super easy and mostly flat, so it’s perfect for a leisurely ride. Plus, you’ll only come across the main road in a few short sections. If you’re feeling a bit lazy, you could always just walk a portion of the path, starting from the lovely towns of Domaso or Gravedona.

Kids will love this ride too. There’s always something to keep them entertained, for example the amazing adventure park in Gravedona, fun is guaranteed even for adults. And if you’re worried about getting hungry, there are plenty of pizzerias and restaurants along the way where you can refuel.

The best time to take this ride is in the spring or autumn. The weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller. But let’s be honest, Lake Como is beautiful any time of year. If you can time your visit for a summer evening, you might be lucky enough to catch a stunning sunset or a fireworks display over the lake.

Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

  • Highlights: charming villages and the majestic Legnone mountain
  • Distance: approximately 10 kilometers
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Terrain: mostly flat, with a few gentle slopes

Gera Lario – Dongo cycling path is around 6,2 miles (10 km)

Climb to Monte San Primo cycling

Almost to the top, the hard work pays off

Let’s talk about conquering Monte San Primo. It’s not just a ride; it’s an experience. Imagine starting your journey at the Colma del Piano, near the Caglio Observatory. From there, you’ll be greeted by stunning views that hint at the even more spectacular panoramas to come. The initial descent towards Asso is a warm-up, preparing you for what lies ahead.

Soon, you’ll find yourself on a dirt track that leads you up to Alpe Spessola. The views from here are simply breathtaking – the lake, the plains below, it’s all laid out before you. But don’t get too comfortable; from here, the trail gets a bit more technical. After what feels like an eternity of climbing, you’ll reach a clearing with a charming farmhouse. This is a great spot to catch your breath and take in the scenery. The trail from here is more forgiving, leading you to Alpe di Terrabiotta.

As you continue your ascent, you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush meadows and towering peaks. The final push to the summit is steep, but the reward is worth it. From the iconic Monte Nuvolone to the charming village of Bellagio, the landscape is simply breathtaking. It got late? Don’t worry, there are tons of accommodations here where to spend an amazing night.

Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

  • Highlights: panoramic views, challenging climbs, and a sense of accomplishment.
  • Distance: approximately 8 in km.
  • Difficulty: moderate to difficult, depending on your fitness level.
  • Terrain: mostly dirt tracks and single-track trails with some technical sections.
