Kayaking and Canoeing

Kayaking and Canoeing

Contents

Beyond its serene beauty, Lake Como reveals a more adventurous side. Its winding waterways, dotted with hidden coves and dramatic cliffs, offer exciting opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. These two activities offer a fantastic way to explore the outdoors and enjoy the water.

There are many different routes to choose from, ranging from calm, sheltered bays to challenging rapids. No matter what your skill level is.

Typically, you can rent a kayak or canoe for a few hours or a full day. Many people find that 2-3 hours is a comfortable duration and the renting cost goes from €15 to €60 per person, depending on the duration and type of boat.

Why choose kayaking or canoeing on Lake Como?

While the lake offers plenty of calm, sheltered waters, there are also opportunities for more adventurous souls. Seek out hidden coves, explore secluded beaches, and even tackle some exciting rapids. The choice is yours.

From the water, you’ll see Lake Como in a whole new light. You’ll get up-close views of historic villas, discover secret swimming spots, and experience the tranquility of nature. It’s a new perspective that few tourists ever get to enjoy.

Think kayaking and canoeing are just for the laid-back? Think again. Paddling works your entire body, from your shoulders to your core. It’s a fun, low-impact way to stay fit while enjoying the great outdoors. So, the next time you’re looking for a fun and effective way to get fit, consider grabbing a paddle and hitting the water. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll see results.

The Best Time to Kayak or Canoe on Lake Como

Man canoeing in a cloudy day

The best time to paddle Lake Como depends, of course, on your personal preferences. Here we just describe the different seasons and their pros and cons. So, let’s break it down season by season:

Spring (April – May)

Springtime on Lake Como is a magical period. The weather is mild, the crowds are fewer, and the landscape is awash with vibrant colors, especially with its blooming wildflowers. The lake’s waters are calm, making it a perfect time for beginners to paddle.

Summer (June – August)

Is the peak season on Lake Como, and for good reason. The weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the rays. However, the lake can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays.

Autumn (September – November)

This time of the year, the weather is mild, the crowds have thinned, and the landscape is ablaze with fall foliage. The air is crisp, the water is clear, and the overall atmosphere is serene.

Winter (December – March)

The lake is often quiet, and the scenery is breathtaking. However, the weather can be unpredictable, with cold temperatures and occasional rain or snow. If you’re up for a challenge, winter paddling can be a rewarding experience (or not, depending on the weather, here a more detailed article about that).

Where to rent a Kayak or a Canoe on the Lake

Many towns along the lake, like Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio, have local rental shops. These shops often offer a variety of water sports equipment, including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. If you want to be prepared once arrived, I recommend to check some websites, like Click & Boat and Nautal, that allow you to rent boats directly from local owners.

Of course, school and rental shops are widespread on the southern and central parts of the Lake, where major cities are located, but there is at least one in almost every town. Remember, your hotel or accommodation might have partnerships with local rental shops or offer rental services themselves.

Here are just a few examples of rental shops and schools, but there are many more located in various cities around the lake.
