Best period to Swim in Lake Como

Man diving in the Lake

Lake Como isn’t exactly the Mediterranean Sea. Of course it’s a stunning lake, but it’s also got a bit of a chill factor, especially for those of us who aren’t used to cooler waters. The sweet spot for swimming is generally July and August, when the lake warms up a bit. Think of it as the lake’s peak swimming season.

Something a bit different is represented by shoulder seasons, that offer a nice balance between warm weather and fewer crowds. The water temperature is still pleasant, and you’ll have more opportunities to enjoy the lake without the hustle and bustle.

Don’t even think of swimming or diving in the Lake during winter or late fall, you’ll freeze. A memo: is true, there are no waves here at Lake Como (and that is not helping for the temperature) and most important there are no official lifeguards so be aware of your surroundings if you decide to swim away from popular spot and mostly away from peak season.

Best beaches for swim on Lake Como

Diving into Lake Como’s crystal-clear waters is a must-do for any visitor. While the lake boasts countless dreamy shores, a few stand out for their pristine beaches and inviting ambiance. If you’re seeking the perfect spot to cool off and soak up the sun, look no further than Riva Bianca, Villa Olmo, and Parco Ulisse Guzzi. These three stunning locations offer a unique blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and modern amenities, making them ideal for a memorable day by the lake.

Riva Bianca Beach (Lierna)

Riva Bianca in Lierna

The beach gets its name from the tiny, white stones that carpet the shore, creating a stunning contrast against the deep blue waters of the lake. It’s a truly unique sight that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret spot. While it’s not as crowded as some of the more famous beaches on Lake Como, Riva Bianca still offers all the amenities you need for a perfect day out.

Getting to Riva Bianca is a breeze. There’s a convenient parking area near the village of Castello, and from there, it’s just a short walk to the beach. For the best experience, visit Riva Bianca on a weekday or during the off-season to avoid the crowds. Riva Bianca Beach is a good solution even for a refreshing stop from the walk on Sentiero del Viandante, that goes sidewards.

Passocode: relaxing vibes! Leave your worries behind and soak up the sun on the soft pebbles. The beach is full of amenities, for example a nearby kiosk serves up snacks, drinks, and ice cream, so you can stay hydrated and fueled and if you’re feeling active, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the lake.

Lido Villa Olmo (Como)

Ever wondered where the locals in Como go to soak up the sun and escape the hustle and bustle? Look no further than Lido Villa Olmo. This historic beach club, nestled on the shores of the stunning Lake Como, has been a beloved spot for generations. The story of Lido Villa Olmo is one of resilience and passion.

Despite facing numerous hurdles, including natural disasters and bureaucratic challenges, the dedicated team behind the lido has always found a way to keep this beloved spot thriving. Lido Villa Olmo’s roots stretch back to the 1930s when it was first established within the Villa Olmo park. Over the years, it’s weathered storms, faced challenges, and emerged stronger, always welcoming visitors with open arms.

Sure, Lido Villa Olmo offers all the classic beach amenities you’d expect: sun loungers, umbrellas, and a refreshing dip in the lake. But there’s so much more to discover here. Take a dip in one of the two pools (swimming cup mandatory), perfect for those who prefer a more ccontrolled swim. No need to specify, don’t miss a visit to Villa Olmo palace while here.

Parco Ulisse Guzzi Beach (Abbadia Lariana)

Looking for a slice of paradise on Lake Como? Look no further than Parco Ulisse Guzzi. This sprawling park, on the shores of Abbadia Lariana, offers a tranquil refuge. With its soft, grassy lawns, towering trees, and a pristine pebble beach, it’s the perfect spot to unwind. The coolest thing? Is like 1 minute walk from the Abbadia Lariana train station.

A Beach for Everyone. Whether you prefer to relax under the shade of an olive tree or dip your toes in the crystal-clear waters, Parco Ulisse Guzzi has something for you. The shallow waters make it ideal for families with young children, while the panoramic walking path offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

To ensure a top-notch experience and maintain the park’s beauty, there’s a small fee for entry on weekends. Don’t worry, it’s a bargain for all the fun you’ll have! (Kids under 10 and seniors over 65 enjoy free entry). Note that are no reservations, just show up and enjoy the fun. Another cool thing, that is perfect if you’re not a morning person, is that entry is free on weekdays after 4:30 PM and weekends after 5 PM.

Best activities while swimming on Lake Como

Friends diving and splashing around

Many beaches have shallow, sandy areas perfect for wading and splashing around. If you’re looking to take your swim to the next level, consider activities as Stand-Up Paddleboarding, Snorkeling and Diving. As a beach lover I adore playing football and volley, on sandy fields and with a pair of sunglasses on.

Tired of the crowded areas? Just rent a pedal boat or arrange a private cruise to go far far away from the bank and immerse yourself in a paradisiac ambience, only you (your loved ones, the captain,) and the unspoiled nature. Let’s break down these solutions.

Private Cruise for an offshore swim

Captain POV

Now, picture yourself taking a refreshing dip in the lake’s limpid waters, far from the crowds. Sounds dreamy, right? Well, it’s time to turn that dream into reality with a private cruise and offshore swim. Private cruises are tailored to your desires.

Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or a first-time dipper, they’ll craft an unforgettable experience. Expert captains will navigate you to secluded coves and hidden beaches, where you can enjoy a peaceful swim surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Many boats offer onboard amenities such as Wi-Fi, gourmet snacks, and refreshing beverages.

The cost of a private cruise on Lake Como varies depending on the size of the boat, the duration of the tour, and the specific services included. A typical 2-hour cruise might cost around €300-€500, while a full-day excursion could range from €800 to €2,000 or more.

Snorkeling and diving to see the beauty underwater

Snorkeling in Lake Como is a fantastic way to discover the underwater world without the need for scuba gear. You’ll be amazed by the variety of fish species, including perch, pike, and even the occasional catfish. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful plants and unique rock formations that create fascinating underwater landscapes.

For a more immersive experience, scuba diving is the way to go. Lake Como offers a range of dive sites, from shallow reefs to deeper wrecks. You’ll encounter a diverse ecosystem, including schools of fish, crayfish, and even the elusive freshwater octopus.

One of the most exciting aspects of diving in Lake Como is the opportunity to explore historic shipwrecks. These underwater time capsules offer a glimpse into the past and are home to a variety of marine life.

Rent a Pedal Boat for Family fun!

Couples having fun on a pedal boat

Looking for a unique way to experience the beauty of Lake Como? Renting a pedal boat is the perfect activity for families and friends. Pedal boats offer a leisurely and eco-friendly way to explore the lake. You can cruise along the shoreline, admire the luxurious villas, or simply relax and soak up the sun.

Pedal boats are simple to operate, making them ideal for people of all ages. On a Pedal boat you can even arrange your own picnic on the water. Of course, it needs to be a calm, sunny day. You’ll surely have fun. Try to go away from the bank to discover the peaceful sensation of bathing/swimming alone.

Several rental companies around Lake Como offer pedal boat rentals. Popular spots include Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and all the major towns. Even though pedal boats are usually equipped with ad-hoc compartment, remember to bring your own waterproof bag to take phone and personal effects with you. No experience necessary, just hop in and start pedaling!

Beach activities (Surfing and ball sports)

SUP – Stand Up Paddleboarding

If you’re looking to get a little more active, why not bring a ball or two? Whether it’s a classic game of beach volleyball or a friendly game of frisbee, the wide-open spaces of Lake Como’s beaches provide the perfect setting. Just be mindful of other beachgoers, especially during peak season.

Grab a net, a ball, and a few friends for a classic game of beach volleyball. The soft sand and stunning lake views make it a truly unforgettable experience. Or, otherwise, kick around a soccer ball. The wide-open spaces on many beaches are perfect for a friendly match.

Other alternatives are Kayaking and Canoeing, just grab a kayak or canoe and explore the hidden coves and inlets. Try see the lake from a different perspective and spot some wildlife; or even Paddleboarding, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has become increasingly popular on Lake Como.

Discovering Lake Como is also the chance to absorb the lake’s natural beauty and rich history in a unique and unforgettable way. Have fun, get a tan and build memories that you will cherish forever. Ready to dive in? Lake Como offers the perfect escape for swimming, sunbathing, and more. Book your trip today and witness the beauty of the lake firsthand.
