Varenna

Contents

Situated on the lake’s eastern shore, directly across from Menaggio and Bellagio, Varenna has an enviable vantage point, perfect for anyone who loves views with a side of easy access. As you stroll through its narrow, cobbled streets, you’ll find yourself surrounded by colorful houses, quaint cafés, and scenic views that seem straight out of a postcard.

The mountains rise dramatically behind the town, creating a picturesque backdrop to the calm waters below. The lakefront promenade is a must-visit, with its gently sloping path and breathtaking views of the water and nearby villages. Let me take you to Varenna, one of the most beautiful spots along Lake Como.

What to see in Varenna

Varenna isn’t just another spot on the Lake Como map, it’s a place that holds onto its charm while letting you enjoy the kind of relaxed Italian lifestyle that you don’t want to leave behind. So, what exactly should you check out while you’re here? Let’s take a walk through Varenna and see the highlights!

Villa Monastero

Villa Monastero

One of the main attractions in Varenna is Villa Monastero, a beautiful villa with a magnificent botanical garden. Once a monastery, now a historical villa with botanical gardens stretching right along the lake, this place is something special. You can wander through the lush gardens, take in the impressive views of the lake, and peek inside the villa to see how the upper crust used to live back in the day.

The villa is open to the public and houses an impressive collection of art and furniture. The garden is also worth visiting, with its beautiful terraces, fountains, and sculptures.

Vezio Castle

Villa del Balbianello

Another must-see attraction in Varenna is the Vezio Castle, a medieval castle located on a hill above the town.

It’s a bit of a climb to get there, but the views are absolutely worth it. Once you reach the top, you can explore the old castle, check out the towers, and learn a bit about the history of the area. The castle offers stunning views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains, and is also home to a falconry center where you can see birds of prey up close.

Church of San Giorgio

Church of San Giorgio

In addition to its beautiful villas and gardens, Varenna also has several churches that are worth visiting.

The most famous is the Church of San Giorgio, which dates back to the 14th century and houses several beautiful frescoes, some of which date back to the 16th century. One of the standout features of the church is its altar, with intricate details that reflect the religious art of the time. What’s also worth noting is the stunning view of the church from the lake, where its bell tower stands as a guiding landmark, signaling the town’s presence

Lakefront Promenade

The lakefront promenade is the first stop that’ll make you fall for Varenna. It’s a perfect place to take your time, breathe in the fresh air, and marvel at the views. With the calm waters of Lake Como at your feet and the mountains rising in the distance, it’s a place where time slows down, whether you’re walking, sitting on one of the benches, or just soaking up the peaceful vibe.

It’s a great spot to start your visit, and trust me, it’s impossible not to snap a few photos along the way. Along the promenade, you will find many restaurants and cafes where you can stop for a meal or a drink while enjoying the view.

Sentiero del Viandante

A Women walking in Sentiero del Viandante

If you’re a fan of hiking and love a good view (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), the Sentiero del Viandante is a must-do. This ancient trail runs along the eastern shore of Lake Como, connecting Varenna to several other towns. It’s about a 45-minute walk from Varenna’s town center to the start of the trail, and trust me, it’s worth it.

The Sentiero del Viandante (which means “Wayfarer’s Path”) was originally used by travelers and pilgrims in centuries past. These days, it’s a beautiful, scenic trail that takes you through forests, small villages, and terraced hills. You’ll pass by vineyards, olive groves, and even old stone buildings that feel like they’ve been frozen in time. Along the way, the views are incredible; at times you’ll catch glimpses of the lake below, while at other moments, you’ll be up high with the mountains towering around you. The trail isn’t too difficult, but it does have some steep sections, so make sure to bring proper shoes and a water bottle.

Villa Cipressi

Villa Cipressi

Just a short walk from the heart of Varenna, Villa Cipressi a beautiful historical site, now a luxurious hotel. This historical villa, dating back to the 14th century, sits right on the shores of Lake Como, with one of the most stunning gardens in the area. The villa itself is a beautiful example of Italian architecture, but it’s the gardens that steal the show. They cascade down towards the lake in terraces, and each level offers a unique view of the water and the surrounding mountains. From lush greenery to fragrant flowers, the gardens are a peaceful paradise that feels like something out of a dream.

While the villa operates as a hotel, welcoming guests from all over the world, the gardens are open to the public for an entrance fee (around 10€ per person). You can wander through the gardens, take in the view from various spots, and just let the serenity of the place wash over you. The villa also houses a lovely restaurant, where you can enjoy a meal with a view that’s nothing short of spectacular. If you’re looking to add a little touch of luxury to your visit, this is the place to do it.

Fiumelatte

Fiumelatte

Translating to “Milky River,” this remarkable waterway is known for its unique characteristics that set it apart from any ordinary river. The Fiumelatte River is one of the shortest rivers in Italy, stretching for just 250 meters. Its most intriguing feature is its milky-white appearance, which resembles the frothy wake of a passing steamboat.

This phenomenon is the result of water rushing down from the surrounding mountains, cascading through underground caverns and eventually emerging into the daylight. The turbulence created by this underground journey transforms the water into a frothy, milky cascade.

Walk of Lovers

Beautiful Fountain in Parco Civico Olivelli

This scenic lakeside path is one of the most popular spots in Varenna, and for good reason. The Walk of Lovers stretches along the shoreline of Lake Como, offering breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains, making it a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll, a quiet moment, or even a romantic sunset.

The walk itself is short but incredibly sweet, only a few hundred meters long, it’s an easy and relaxing route that can be enjoyed by anyone. The path is lined with lush vegetation and flowers, and it’s all set against the backdrop of the sparkling waters of Lake Como. As you walk, you’ll pass by colorful houses, charming little docks, and stunning vistas, making it an excellent spot for photos, especially if you’re in the mood for a little romance.

Varenna’s Beaches

Varenna has some lovely spots where you can kick back, relax, and enjoy Lake Como in all its glory. Whether you’re up for a swim or just soaking in the atmosphere, the beaches here offer the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

Olivedo Lido – Lido di Varenna

Olivedo Lido – Lido di Varenna

Located just a short walk from the town center, this well-kept lakeside area offers a few things you might not find at every lakefront spot: sunbeds, umbrellas, and a little bar serving cold drinks. It’s a great place to lounge, read a book, or people-watch while taking in some stunning views of the lake and the mountains. The water here is calm and clear, making it ideal for a refreshing dip when the weather gets hot.

Public Beaches

If you’re after something more casual, Varenna’s public beaches are another option. Located just a bit further along the lakefront promenade, these spots don’t have all the amenities of Lido di Varenna, but it still gives you a great opportunity to enjoy the lake. The water is clean and inviting, and the surroundings are peaceful, perfect for those who prefer a more natural experience.

History of Varenna

Varenna’s history can be traced back to the Roman era, when the town was likely a small settlement along the shores of the lake. While there’s no evidence of huge Roman buildings, the area was an important part of the lake’s trade and communication routes. Think of it as a laid-back lakeside stopover for merchants and travelers heading through the region.

By the Middle Ages, Varenna was firmly established as a small but bustling village. The area became part of the Duchy of Milan, and for a while, it had a pretty important role in the region’s defense system. In the 12th century, the Vezio Castle was built on the hilltop above Varenna. This fortress played a critical role in controlling the surrounding area, offering both a defensive position and a stunning panoramic view of the lake. The castle’s strategic location made it an important military outpost in the centuries that followed, especially during the countless power struggles between the various local lords.

The real beauty of Varenna’s medieval period is how its history is still visible today, Vezio Castle is still standing (and a fun place to visit), and you can walk around the old streets and imagine what it must have been like during the times of medieval knights and feuding families.

By the time the Renaissance rolled around, Varenna was starting to get a taste of the wealth and sophistication that came with Lake Como’s rising popularity. The town became home to several noble families, and they weren’t shy about showing off their newfound wealth. This is when you see the construction of some of the town’s grandest villas, Villa Monastero, for example, which was originally a monastery, was transformed into a beautiful villa during this period.

But Varenna’s wealth wasn’t all about lavish villas. The town became an important hub for trade, particularly in fishing and agriculture, and it benefited from its access to the lake, which made it a prime location for both business and leisure.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Varenna, like much of Lake Como, became a destination for aristocrats, intellectuals, and artists. It wasn’t quite as famous as some of the other towns on the lake, but that was part of its charm. Varenna maintained a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere, attracting those who preferred peace and natural beauty over the hustle of the bigger cities.

Today Varenna is a mix of old and new, with its historical sites still standing proud and modern life continuing to unfold around them.
