Planning a Wedding on Lake Como

Planning a Wedding on Lake Como

Contents

Planning a wedding, in general, can feel like navigating a minefield of seating charts and floral arrangements. Planning a destination wedding adds a whole new layer of complexity (think legal paperwork in a foreign language and coordinating with vendors across continents).

But fear not! This guide is here to help you navigate the process of planning your perfect Lake Como wedding.

From choosing the right venue to handling the nitty-gritty details. We’ll cover everything you need to know, from the big decisions (like where to say “I do”) to the smaller ones (like which type of Prosecco to serve). And remember, Lake Como offers a range of breathtaking venues that can turn your wedding dreams into a reality.

Step 0 – Set the timeline and the steps

This isn’t about stressing you out; it’s about giving you a roadmap to avoid those last-minute panics.

  • Finalize your menu and catering details
  • Choose your wedding attire
  • Book transportation for you and your guests
  • Start planning the ceremony and reception details
3-6 Months Out: The Final Touches (aka the “Almost There” Phase)
  • Apply for necessary marriage licenses and paperwork
  • Send out wedding invitations
  • Finalize details with all your vendors
1-3 Months Out: The Home Stretch (aka the “Time to Get Excited” Phase)
  • Finalize seating arrangements
  • Confirm final guest count
  • Arrange for any necessary rentals
  • Pack your bags!
The Week Of: The Final Countdown (aka the “Let’s Do This” Phase)
  • Relax and enjoy the pre-wedding festivities
  • Arrive in Lake Como and meet with your wedding planner (if applicable)

Step 1 – Find Your Perfect Venue

Alright, let’s get down to the real heart of wedding planning: the venue. On Lake Como, the options are, shall we say, not too shabby. We’re talking about places that are so beautiful, they practically guarantee stunning wedding photos.

Grand Historic Villas

Villa Lattuada, your castle!

Lake Como is practically synonymous with its grand villas. These aren’t just houses; they’re historical landmarks with sprawling gardens, opulent interiors, and breathtaking lake views. Choosing a villa means stepping into a world of timeless elegance. For a truly classic Italian wedding, Villas like Balbianello (of Star Wars and Casino Royale fame) offer unparalleled views and a sense of history. Imagine exchanging vows on a terrace overlooking the lake – talk about romantic!

Other great examples are Villa Melzi and its majestic gardens, Villa Monastero in Varenna and Villa Carlotta. But keep in mind, most of these historical landmarks offer only the possibility to celebrate the wedding and don’t allow any form of reception (lunch or dinner). Places where reception in possible include Villa Lattuada and Villa Dolceacqua (both near Lecco).

Just remember: Villas often have specific rules and restrictions regarding noise levels, catering, and guest capacity. It’s essential to check these details before making a decision. Also, some villas are only accessible by boat, which adds a bit of logistical fun.

Luxury Hotels

Wedding in Villa Serbelloni

If you prefer a more streamlined wedding experience, a luxury hotel might be the perfect choice. These venues offer convenience, impeccable service, and often have on-site catering and event planning teams. Many hotels have dedicated wedding spaces, both indoor and outdoor, and can handle all the logistical details, from setting up the ceremony to coordinating with vendors.

The best example of Hotel (that is also a Villa, but I’m not cheating) is Hotel Villa Serbelloni, that offers a carefully service from the accommodations to reception.

Book your stay in Villa Serbelloni now!

Restaurants and Lakeside Locations

For smaller, more intimate weddings, consider a restaurant with a stunning lake view or another unique lakeside location. These venues offer a more relaxed atmosphere and are perfect for couples who want a less formal celebration. But might have limited capacity and may not be able to accommodate large weddings. Also, you’ll need to consider catering and other logistical details separately. This is a more familiar and simply way to make your dreams come true.

There are a lot of great restaurants in the area, from Michelin-starred L’ARIA and Kitchen, to romantic and candlelit locations like La Breva and Crotto Hotel Restaurant.

On a Boat!

Getting married on a boat is a truly unique and memorable experience, and Lake Como provides the perfect setting for such a special occasion. It’s like turning your wedding into a mini-cruise, but with considerably better vows (hopefully!).

Wedding on a Boat

You can choose from different kind of boats (classic riva, yachts, ferries) based on considerations like guest capacity, weather contingency, accessibility, logistics. Ceremony can be on board, on shore (and reception on board) or you can also choose to cruise during the reception. Options are limitless!

Step 2 – Legal Requirements and Paperwork

Let’s talk about the less glamorous but absolutely crucial part of getting married abroad: the legal stuff. While exchanging vows with a stunning Lake Como backdrop is incredibly romantic, you also want to make sure you’re legally married at the end of the day.

Wedding Paperwork

For Italians

If both of you are Italian citizens, the process is relatively straightforward, as you’re already within the Italian legal system. Two main steps: Publication of Banns and the Ceremony itself. Publication of Banns is nothing more than publish banns at your local municipality (comune) where at least one of you resides. This announces your intention to marry and allows anyone to raise objections. This typically involves presenting various documents, including birth certificates, identity documents, and sometimes proof of residency. The ceremony will take place at the designated location in the municipality, usually the town hall. You’ll need two witnesses.

For foreigners

This is where things get a tad more involved. Since you’re not within the Italian system, you’ll need additional documentation to prove your eligibility to marry.

Nulla Osta or Certificate of No Impediment: this is the key document for foreign citizens. It’s a certificate from your home country stating that there are no legal obstacles to your marriage. You obtain this from your country’s consulate or embassy in Italy, or sometimes directly from your home country’s authorities. The requirements for obtaining this vary by nationality, so contact your consulate or embassy well in advance.

Atto Notorio: in some cases, an Atto Notorio, a sworn statement before an Italian court or notary, might be required to further confirm your eligibility to marry. Your consulate or embassy can advise you on whether this is necessary.

Valid Passports or Identity Documents: you’ll need valid passports or identity documents for both of you.

Birth Certificates: you’ll need original, long-form birth certificates, officially translated into Italian and legalized (usually with an apostille).

Divorce or Annulment Decrees (if applicable): if either of you has been previously married, you’ll need official documents proving the termination of the previous marriage, also translated and legalized.

Declaration of Intended Marriage (Dichiarazione di Matrimonio): you’ll need to make a formal declaration of your intention to marry at the local municipality in Italy a few days before your wedding. This is usually done with the assistance of a translator if you don’t speak Italian.

Two Witnesses: you’ll need two witnesses for the civil ceremony.

Attention! All foreign documents must be officially translated into Italian by a certified translator and legalized with an apostille (a special certification that authenticates the document for use in another country). A local wedding planner can be invaluable in navigating the Italian bureaucracy and coordinating with local authorities. They can handle the paperwork, translations, and other logistical details, making the process much smoother.

Step 3 – Creating Your Dream Team (Wedding Planner, Florist, DJ)

Planning a wedding, especially a destination wedding on Lake Como, is a big undertaking. Unless you’re secretly a wedding planning ninja, you’ll need a solid team of professionals to bring your vision to life. Here’s a breakdown of the key players you’ll want on your side:

The Wedding Planner – Your Lake Como Guru

Wedding planner talking to the bride

They know the area inside and out, including the best venues, vendors, and hidden spots. They can navigate local regulations and handle logistics that might be tricky to manage from afar. And more, they have established relationships with trusted local vendors, which can save you time and effort in finding reliable professionals. Of course, if you don’t speak Italian, a local planner can be invaluable in communicating with vendors and handling any language barriers.

The Florist – Bringing the Beauty of Lake Como to Life

Florist creating a bouquet

Flowers are an essential part of any wedding, and a skilled florist can transform your venue into a floral paradise. They’ll know which flowers are in season and can source the best local blooms, and they can help you create floral arrangements that complement your venue and wedding style.

The DJ/Musician – Setting the Mood for Celebration

Dancing at wedding

Music is key to creating the right atmosphere at your wedding. Both DJ and Live Bands will handle the technical aspects of the music, ensuring the sound quality is excellent and the lighting enhances the ambiance. Let’s see the different aspects:

  • DJ: a good DJ can keep the party going all night, playing a mix of music that will appeal to all your guests.
  • Live Band/Musicians: live music can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your wedding. Consider hiring a band that plays Italian music or a classical ensemble for your ceremony.

The Photographer/Videographer: Capturing the Memories

Your Local photographer

Your wedding photos and videos will be your lasting memories of the day, so choosing a skilled photographer and videographer is essential. Look for a photographer and videographer whose style you like and who have experience shooting weddings on Lake Como. They’ll know the best locations for photos and can capture the beauty of the lake and surrounding area.

The Caterer: Creating a Culinary Experience

Catering at wedding

Food is a central part of any Italian celebration, and your wedding catering should be no exception. They can accommodate any dietary restrictions or allergies that your guests may have. Choose a caterer who specializes in Italian cuisine and can create a menu that reflects the region’s flavors.

Step 4 – Accommodations (for you and your guests)

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Finding the perfect place for you and your wedding guests is key to a successful Lake Como celebration. We’ve curated a selection of the most luxurious and convenient accommodations, ensuring everyone enjoys a comfortable and memorable stay throughout the wedding festivities.

If you’re looking to go all out (and maybe treat a few special guests), Lake Como’s luxury hotels are hard to beat. These aren’t just places to crash; they’re destinations in themselves, offering top-notch service, stunning views, and all the amenities you could possibly need. Suggested options are Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Grand Hotel Vittoria, a must-to-consider in the Lake Como Top Hotel Panorama.

For larger groups or families who want more space and privacy, renting a villa or apartment can be a great option. Renting a villa allows you to keep everyone together in one place, creating a fun and social atmosphere. Renting apartments in towns like Varenna or Bellagio gives your guests a chance to experience local life and be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and other attractions.

Step 5 – Rehearsal Dinner (if any)

Rehearsal dinner on a boat

The rehearsal dinner on Lake Como can be anything you want it to be, from a casual lakeside gathering to a formal multi-course meal. The key is to choose a setting and style that reflects your overall wedding vibe and allows your guests to mingle and enjoy themselves.

From lakeside restaurants, a great way to enjoy the lake’s beauty one last time before the wedding day, to a boat cruise dinner, on a private cruise you’ll enjoy stunning views, delicious food, and good company while cruising the beautiful waters of Lake Como. Ask your wedding planner for options. If you want to start get a sense of what that is check the services offered by Orizzonti Lake Como.

While good food and conversation are usually enough to make a rehearsal dinner enjoyable, you can add some extra touches to make it even more special. Speeches and Toasts are a great opportunity for close family and friends to share stories and well wishes for the couple. A slideshow or video of photos or videos of the couple can be a fun and sentimental addition.

Extra Step – Inspiration and Ideas

For decorations, think less ballroom glitz and more natural elegance. Lush floral arrangements featuring local blooms like hydrangeas and olive branches work beautifully. Consider incorporating lemons or other citrus fruits for a pop of color and a distinctly Italian feel. String lights or lanterns can create a magical atmosphere for evening receptions, reflecting beautifully on the lake’s surface.

For activities, a boat tour for your guests before or after the wedding provides a unique way to experience the lake’s beauty.

A fireworks display over the water is undeniably dramatic. For food, naturally, local is best. A menu featuring fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and regional wines is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Don’t forget the gelato cart for a sweet treat!

For a truly memorable touch, consider arriving at your ceremony by boat. It’s a classic Lake Como move and makes for a stunning entrance. As I said options are endless and you can even arrive at your wedding on a… plane! This service is offered by Aero Club Como.

Lake Como Wedding Advices

Having seen a few of these lakeside celebrations go down, I’ve got a few tips to share – the kind of stuff you might not find in a generic wedding planning brochure.

  • Check for noise restrictions: some venues may have noise restrictions, especially for outdoor events. This is important to consider if you plan on having live music or a late-night reception.
  • Consider a symbolic ceremony: if you’re not planning a legal ceremony in Italy, you can have a symbolic ceremony at your chosen venue. This can simplify the paperwork and allow for more flexibility in the ceremony style.
  • Provide guests with information about the area: create a welcome package for your guests with information about Lake Como, including local attractions, restaurants, and transportation options.
  • Hire a local wedding planner: a local wedding planner can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of planning a destination wedding on Lake Como. They will have local knowledge, vendor connections, and experience in handling the logistics.

Tip for the guests: if you came from abroad and you travel to Lake Como on a plane, a great way to save some money is to rent a car at the destination airport:
