Comacina Island

Contents

If you’re visiting Lake Como and find yourself looking for a little island adventure, Comacina Island (Isola Comacina) is an absolute must-see. Sitting on the sparkling waters of the lake, this small yet fascinating island has a rich history, beautiful views, and a vibe that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

The Island spans about 600 meters in length and 200 meters in width; the access is, obviously, only available by water. You can reach it by catching a taxi boat from Ossuccio, a nearby lakeside town, which makes for a quick and scenic ride across the water. Alternatively, you can hop on a boat with Navigazione Laghi, which offers regular services directly to the island from different towns.

Comacina Island Description

Isola Comacina is the only island on Lake Como, and although it might not be the largest, it’s packed with history and charm. Accessible by boat from the nearby towns of Lenno or Tremezzo, the island offers a perfect spot to enjoy some quiet time away from the bustling lakeshore.

The Origins of Comacina Island

The history of Comacina Island is as rich as the views are stunning. The island has been inhabited since the Roman era, and its significance has only grown over time. It was once a strategic military outpost and even a religious center. The most famous period in the island’s history was during the Middle Ages when it was home to a monastery and later became a site of conflict between the various factions of the Lombard and Frankish kingdoms.

In the 12th century, the island was a thriving religious hub. However, in the early 13th century, it was destroyed after a conflict with the nearby town of Como. The monastery was abandoned, and the island was left in ruins for centuries. Today, these ruins provide a glimpse into the island’s storied past, and they’re one of the main attractions for visitors.

Interestingly, the island’s isolation and small size have allowed it to maintain a unique atmosphere, almost frozen in time. So, while you walk through its ruins and enjoy its peaceful nature, you’re quite literally treading in the footsteps of history.
