Villa Melzi Description

Villa Melzi d’Eril, to use its fancy full name, was built in the early 19th century for Francesco Melzi d’Eril, a big-shot in the Napoleonic era. While the villa itself remains a private residence, the surrounding gardens have become a public treasure. Designed in the English style, these gardens blend exotic plants, sculptures, and waterfront pathways, offering a sensory experience that feels as grand as it is calming.

What to Expect at Villa Melzi

The star attraction is, without a doubt, the sprawling gardens. Designed by Luigi Canonica and botanist Luigi Villoresi, the lush greenery perfectly complements the natural beauty of Lake Como. Exotic trees, vibrant flower beds, and ancient sculptures are dotted throughout, with each corner feeling like it was made for quiet contemplation, or a selfie.

Take a leisurely stroll along the pathways that hug the shoreline. You’ll encounter Japanese maples, azaleas, and camellias that look like they’ve been plucked from a postcard. And don’t miss the pond framed by weeping willows—it’s straight out of a fairy tale.

The Chapel

Tucked within the gardens are two delightful surprises: a charming chapel that houses the Melzi family tombs and an orangery that has been transformed into a small museum. Inside, you’ll find Napoleonic memorabilia and artworks that give you a taste of the villa’s historical significance.

Chapel at Villa Melzi

Built in the early 19th century, this charming chapel was designed in a neoclassical style and dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. Though modest in size, the Chapel is a true reflection of the villa’s grandeur and the aesthetic tastes of its time. The interior is simple yet elegant, with classic design.

Spectacular Views

One of the standout features of Villa Melzi is the breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across the property, offering an incredible sight of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains. From nearly every angle, the gardens offer stunning vistas of Lake Como and the surrounding mountains.

The origin of Villa Melzi

Villa Melzi owes its existence to Francesco Melzi d’Eril, a vice president of the Italian Republic under Napoleon Bonaparte. Built between 1808 and 1810, the villa was intended to be a summer residence that matched the prestige of its owner. Architect Giocondo Albertolli was commissioned to create a neoclassical masterpiece, and the gardens were crafted to enhance the villa’s charm.

While the villa itself is off-limits, it’s a testament to the refined taste of its era. And let’s be real, Francesco Melzi didn’t skimp on the details. The gardens alone are enough to make you appreciate the high standards of 19th-century landscaping.
